A Swedish choir comes to Stonewall Jackson Elementary School from 9-11 a.m., Dec. 10, to perform a Swedish Lucia program.
Since Scandinavia and Sweden will be studied for Special Events in March this will be a great way for the children to learn about a tradition that is a big part of Christmas in these countries.
Every holiday season, Santa Lucia is celebrated in Sweden and Scandinavia on Dec. 13. Early in the morning, girls dress up in long white gowns, glitter, and Lucia crowns, and boys dress up in long white gowns and hats with stars — some dress as gnomes or gingerbread men.
Their lighted candles spread a glow around them as they sing Santa Lucia carols to friends and neighbors and hand out the special gingersnap and Lucia bun treats.
According to legend, Lucia was a medieval saint who carried food and drink to the hungry folk in Sweden during a period of famine. She was seen across the lakes with her white gown and crown of lights. The costume is still the same today.
