Stuff the Bus organizer Kwynn Kirkhuff
When Dallas ISD budgets are tightened, it forces some of our schools to think outside the box.
At Stonewall Jackson Elementary School, Debra Bishop, PTA auction co-chair, sprung into action after she learned about the supply shortage this year.
The school had communicated to the PTA at a meeting in the fall that it probably wouldn’t have enough copy paper to last into the 2010 spring semester, and that a lot of office supplies previously supported by the district had been cut out of the budget all together.
Bishop contacted Alicia Edwards and Kwynn Kirkhuff of SMU, and they immediately contacted several sororities and fraternities that jumped at the idea of being able to support our DISD elementary school with supplies as part of their volunteer projects of the year.
The SMU supply drive for Stonewall was initiated, and on Dec. 1, SMU stuffed a school bus full of supplies and drove it over to the Stonewall campus, where everything was unloaded and generously donated to the school.
